The Smartphone Scene

By Joe • Aug 24th, 2007 • Category: Mobile

Now that the iphone has been fully hacked and some of the hype surrounding it has lowered to bareable levels, its time to recap what smartphones (I take the liberty of applying the term "smartphone" to any windows-based, symbian-based or palm-based device that makes calls).

Personally, I'm looking forward to at&t's new devices, the Tilt and the Juno, which will be replacing the 8525 and the 3125 respectivley.

at&t's 8925 / Tilt / HTC Kaiser

Quick Specs:

  • Windows Mobile 6 Pro
  • 2.8 QVGA Touchscreen
  • 64 mb RAM / 256 ROM
  • 400 mhz processor
  • HSDPA / Wifi
  • MicroSD Expansion
  • GPS
  • 3 MP in the back / VGA in the front (video conferencing, anyone?)

I am really looking forward to this phone, now that at&t has taken their heads out of their asses and decided to launch a new phone that could hurt iPhone sales.

Expect this phone early September

at&t's Juno (4125 perhaps?)

Quick Specs:

  • Windows Mobile 6 Standard (smartphone ed.)
  • Dual keyboards
  • 2 MP Camera with flash
  • HSDPA
  • MicroSD Expansion

Expect this phone early September. I am also looking forward to this phone because I am a huge fan of the Smartphone form factor (I love my 3125) and the addition of a slide out keyboard is going to be killer. I am wondering though, how big is this thing gonna be?

Blackberry Pearl 2

Quick specs:

  • Windows Mobile 6 Standard (smartphone ed.)
  • GPS (?)
  • CDMA (headed for Sprint)

Expect this device to arrive early '08 or possibly thanksgiving '07. Well what can I say…another RIM device, with a nice form factor, but a Blackberry nevertheless.

Motorola Q2

Q2

  • Windows Mobile 6 Standard (smartphone ed.)
  • EVDO 128 ROM / 64 RAM
  • 1.3 MP cam

Available now. I've read mixed reviews of this device, some hate what Verizon has done to the WM6 interface, but others are loving the new look.
