We have compiled a list of the most useful (and free) programs for Windows and replacements. Why use Winzip and get a nag-screen to register when there are free programs out there? Why wait for Adobe Reader to load (10-15 seconds) everytime you open a PDF?  Why go open up Nero to burn or create an ISO when I can be done within a context menu?

• 7 zip. (Winzip and WinRAR replacement) Fast and free. Can handle more file types. Starts up really quickly and integrates seamlesly into Windows.
• Foxit. (Adobe Reader replacement) Faster and smaller. Aren’t you tired of waiting 10-15 seconds for Adobe Reader open just to read a PDF file?
• ISO Recorder. (Nero replacement) ISO creation and burning. Make sure you download the appropiate one for your version of Windows (XP SP1, SP2, 2003 server, Vista).
• Firefox. (Internet Explorer replacement)…do I need to say more? Why are you still using IE?
• AVG Free. (Norton AV replacement) Small footprint. Effective. Norton and othes take ton of your RAM to just sit in your background. AVG ranks high in the AV list and we’ve been using it for years and we’re still virus-free.
• Cute PDF. (Adobe Distiller replacement). Fast and easy. Install the Ghost script first. Create PDF by printing to your newly created Cute PDF printer and just specify whre you want to save.
• Filezilla. (CuteFTP replacement) Fast and free.
• Thunderbird. (Outlook Express/Windows Mail replacement: Tons of extensions. Fast
• VLC. (Windows Media Player replacement). Not bloated. Can handle any type of file. You can also use it to stream files and convert files, just to mention a few features.

Free and extremely useful

• iTunes. Our favorite music manager (and streamer)
• Hamachi. Easy to use VPN solution (Mac and Linux versions also
• Virtual Clone Drive : CD emulator.
